Our Mission:
ReadWest is committed to helping parents help their children
succeed in school.
What is Family Literacy?
The term describes literacy as listening, speaking, reading,
and writing development in families. The family is where the
cycle of learning begins. Parents are their children’s first
and most influential teachers. Many studies link a child’s
literacy development and school success to parental
involvement and the literacy environment in the home.
Reading is a joyful and valuable activity that brings grand
rewards.
When parents and children read together, a close family
bond and a love of reading develops that can last a
lifetime. Experts agree on what parents have known for
generations - reading aloud together is one of the best ways
parents can help their children become successful readers.
In fact, reading together in the home can transform
children’s achievements. No matter what goals parents have
for their children, they are more likely to reach them if
they have a strong reading foundation.
A team of trained and experienced ReadWest Family
Literacy volunteers is ready to assist parents.
The volunteers will demonstrate how to create positive
reading and learning experiences for children, how to turn
everyday activities into opportunities to foster literacy,
and how to create activities that are fun for parents and
children. Through grants and contributions ReadWest is able
to provide this service free of charge and to give every
child a storybook and every parent helpful information at
each session.
Through a combined effort of volunteers, schools,
businesses, and parents, the literacy levels of our children
can be greatly increased and their futures made brighter.
